The secret is out…NMRA-Keystone Drag Racing Series is throwing a 5.0L Shootout at the NMRA event at Norwalk (June 14-16, 2013) and we hope Joe “Coffeeman” Decaria makes the trip to Ohio with his super quick street car. The southern Florida Mustang racer pushed his 2011 Mustang GT to an impressive 9.16 at 150 mph. Those runs were made at Palm Beach International Raceway (PBIR) and we also hope see Coffeeman at the NMRA-Nitto Tire Spring Break Shootout that is rapidly approaching (March 7-10, 2013 at Bradenton Motorsports Park). A Ford Racing Aluminator engine resides in the engine bay. Power By The Hour built the car with tuning and project direction coming from Lund Racing—Ken Bjonnes is the point man on this project. Other highlights include a 3,880-pound race weight, 6R80 automatic transmission (Circle D built), custom Circle D torque converter, Lund Racing air-to-water intercooler, and a ProCharger F1A centrifugal supercharger.
This isn’t the first time we’ve watched Coffeeman unleash the fury with his Mustang as we witnessed several 9.70s last year around this time when the car was equipped with a ProCharger D1SC supercharger. A broken keyway on the crankshaft prevented Coffeeman from strutting his stuff to its full potential at the 2012 NMRA season opener. He did catch up with us at the 2012 NMRA World Finals (Bowling Green, KY) as he competed in 5.0 Mustang & Super Ford Magazine’s King of the Street challenge. Coffeeman ran his Mustang on the 19-inch wheels and drag radials due to the nature of the magazine challenge. He still popped off an impressive 9.54 at 144 mph despite the massive wheel fitment. The 9.16 at 150 mph comes courtesy of a little more boost, E85 fuel, and a set of Mickey Thompson 275/60-15 Pro radials and skinnies replacing the heavy 19-inch street wheel combination from the NMRA World Finals. The Mustang 5.0 dropped a 1.46 60-foot time on the 9.16 run and an even quicker 1.44 on a 9.17 back-up pass.
